In the Ted Talks Big Data Is Better Data” by Kenneth Curkier and “Your Social Media Likes Expose More Than You Think” by Jennifer Golbeck the main focus is on researching and collecting data through the internet. The Ted Talk I preferred was Golbecks’s talk on how the things we like on social media reflect on our personalities. The reason I preferred this talk was because I have seen this first hand. The internet has a weird way of showing adds and other things that relate to my life at that very moment without me having to update my Facebook status about the direct circumstance. I’ve always wondered how this happened and after listening to this Ted Talk I feel I have a better understanding of it. I liked the examples they gave in both talks,  in Curkier’s talk he gave the example of cars that detect posture and prevent hi-jaking and in Golbeck’s talk her example of liking curly fries on social media interested me. The first question I have would be what can we do to prevent big data from taking over? Also how far into peoples lives do these Tech Scientists go in order to prove their knowledge to be accurate?

  1. Hi, Kaleigh,
As we explore further, you will learn more about each of your questions. Consider that we are the ones who generate the data, so really it’s like leaving an electronic trail. Data scientists don’t really go into our lives so much as we go out into the virtual world — so we determine that trail. The accuracy lies in connecting the many paths we take and understanding why we take them. We’ll talk more about this in class, too.
    Thanks for your response!
